What I think about the product
Is the hype for this quadcopter really worth it? I’m basing my review on my experience with the product.
Design: Made of black, shiny and hard plastic. It looks good visually and very easy to spot when on flight. It’s fairly small, like the first few quadcopters that I have tried before. It’s easy to set up and maneuver. It comes with powerful props that you can attach to the machine. It’s quite lightweight compared to other quadcopters I’ve flown. Despite being lightweight the shell can withstand shock, I’ve crashed mine several times but it still works good as new.
This came with a plastic ring prop protector and can be found on the underside of the packaging. Some people missed the prop so make sure you empty the box before discarding it. The protector is great for beginners and those testing their Hubsan indoors since it will tend to bounce off on the walls and furniture.
Function: Camera is okay, not the best that I’ve seen. What do you expect with a 0.3MP camera? And the other downside is that it can only take videos and not photos. Don’t bother with the mic since it can’t capture audio well.
Price: Originally, the Hubsan X4 H170C costs $145.99 on Amazon.
Control: I instantly got the hang of the controls; it feels comfortable and has straightforward functions. Use the joystick to maneuver the quadcopter in four directions: front, back, left and right. That’s just the basics. You can also start taking videos remotely.
The instruction manual was very helpful and calibration of the Hubsan Quad Copter is easy. It has two available modes: Expert and the basic one. You can do flips while using the expert mode! I enjoyed doing flips with my quadcopter.
Battery Life: Battery life isn’t the best; the quadcopter started slowing down at 5 minutes and drains the battery at 6-7 minutes at most. Always bring a spare if you want to explore more with this quadcopter.
Pros and Cons of the product
There are good points and there are also not so good ones with this Quad Copter.
- Comes with a guard and extra props.
- Very easy to control the quadcopter.
- It’s very stable despite strong gusts of wind.
- Durable and survived a few hard crashes to the ground and some trees.
- You can only take videos with this camera. No photo option available, but the camera can be upgrade to 2MP camera.
- Short fly time, roughly around 6-7 minutes at most.
- Issues a loud annoying tone when elevation is engaged, can be really loud indoors.
- Mic can’t even record audio well.
Would I recommend this product?
The Hubsan X4 Copter has its hits and misses, but I would recommend this as a beginner quadcopter. I think the tag line for the Hubsan X4 is “fun straight out of the box” which is true for most parts.
It’s a great quadcopter for hobbyists and beginners alike who don’t want to spend too much on a quadcopter. It has full 4D trim settings and you can also adjust the sensitivity making it perfect for all ages; though I would not suggest you let a small child fly it without supervision (safety first!). I really enjoyed using the expert mode which allowed me to do some flips with the quadcopter.
The protection rings allows beginner RC flyers to experiment without worrying if you would damage the machine. I didn’t even know that there was a protection ring until my daughter started playing with the box! The protection ring is taped in the underside of the inner packaging so better take a look if you have purchased a Hubsan RC Quad Copter , you might have overlooked it. My 10 year old son wanted to try flying it and it crashed multiple times, I thought it would be the end of it but it still kept on flying and working just fine. It is indeed a very durable quadcopter in my opinion.
The camera allows you to take videos, the audio isn’t very helpful but it’s okay, I can deal with it. Flying in expert mode though decreases the camera’s quality so you might want to take note of that. You also need to purchase a micros SD card for recording.
Flight time is at 6 to 7 minutes at most; make sure you carry spare batteries since charging can take 1.5 to 2 hours.
Also you can easily purchase replacement parts for this quadcopter; especially the most used parts such as the protection ring and the propeller. Props come in very cheap and you can get yours at Amazon for less than $7.
It’s still available on Amazon and I’m already ordering one for my 10-year-old since he likes to fly my Hubsan X4 H170C so much I decided to buy a new one as a birthday present (which is still 2 months away) while taking advantage of the sale price. It’s a great quadcopter for all ages and definitely fun to play around; if my 10-year-old can maneuver it then so can you.
