The Design

The brand-new EU Boom 2 Phantom Edition looks compact, sturdy, and durable with the cylindrical shape, rubber spine, and acoustic skin. On a first look, it has a shape of a normal water bottle. With such compact design, you will find it easy to carry the wireless speaker anywhere with you. However, with a weight of 1.2 pounds, it is a rather heavy speaker. There are many lightweight speakers out there, and the new UE Boom, unfortunately, is not one of them. When it comes to the ports and buttons, I think the speaker has a well-designed placement. On top of the speaker, you will find the On/Off power button and the Bluetooth button. On the front side, you will see a large Plus and Minus logo, which controls the volume of the speaker. You can press the two buttons to control the audio output manually.

The UE Boom 2 might be a wireless speaker, but it still supports the use of non-Bluetooth devices via the 3.5mm audio jack slot. There is also a USB port at the bottom of it for charging. The speaker is also perfect for outdoor lovers since it comes with a standard camera mount and D-ring for you to attach it with a lanyard to carry it in the outdoor. There are covers to protect the ports from any dust or water. Overall, I love how the design can cater for both indoor and outdoor uses.

The other editions such as Tropical, BrainFreeze, Cherrybomb, Green Machine, and Yeti offer a different set of body colors, but with similar features and price point.

The Music Controls

Any users will find the speaker easy to use and has quite an intuitive control. There is no extensive guesswork involved when using it. I love the new tap control. It is an upgrade from the previous model, UE Boom, and it is not something that you can find on any other products. With the new feature, you can tap-touch with your two fingers to control the music. To play/pause your music, you will only need to tap the top part of the speaker once. When tapped twice, you will skip the current track forward. However, there are some issues with the control. It is not as consistent and responsive as expected. Sometimes, when you tap it, nothing happens, and this is quite an annoyance. However, the good news is that the new UE Boom 2 wireless speaker is upgradeable via the accompanied mobile app. You will only need to install the app into your smartphones and download any new firmware upgrades made by the manufacturer.

Establishing the Bluetooth Connection

One of the main selling points of this UE Boom 2 speaker is the powerful Bluetooth connection. Just like the tap control, the long connection is a new introduction in this second model. The manufacturer has doubled the wireless range up to 100 feet. The Bluetooth technology allows you to pair up to a total of eight devices but for simultaneous connection, you can establish to two smart devices. Plus, there is also the Re-streaming Feature.

With it, you can connect the UE Boom 2 to a maximum of two UE speakers to stream music for a more comprehensive music experience. I noticed that the long wireless range allows me to walk with the speaker far from my iPad without affecting the music. It can still pump out the music loudly and in a stable state. Plus, the pairing process with iPhones, iPad tablets, HTC smartphones or Samsung Galaxy smartphones should be a breeze. It makes UE Boom 2 a perfect wireless speaker for any at-home party or a newbie user, as compare with Anker Speaker.

The Sound Performance

As far as the sound performance of UE Boom 2 is concerned, I would rate it as above average. It packs an impressive set of two 45-millimeter drivers and two passive radiators. It has no directional bias with the 360 degrees sound design. When compared to the previous model, this particular wireless speaker has a better sound output. It has a maximum 90dBA sound output. The frequency range is between 90Hz and 20 kHz. The audio is louder, crisper and clearer. It has no noise and does not distort when set at a maximum level. However, I wish the bass performance could be better. The bass sound is too average. For such a high price, I expect the bass to have a little bit more punch. Due to the reason, I think the UE Boom is sufficient to compete with other mid-range wireless speakers but still far from the high-end speakers like Bose or Jawbone.

The Battery Life

If you need a long operating speaker, UE Boom 2 is one of the perfect options for you to consider. The Lithium Ion battery can play up to a maximum of 15 hours. To check the current battery status, you can view the battery level directly on the mobile app. The 15-hour battery life should be sufficient for any average users. However, if you wish to have longer hours, you can consider another speaker, UE Megaboom that offers up to 20 non-stop hours of music. When it comes to the charging, it can reach its full capacity quite fast at about 2.75 hours. There is a small LED light on the speaker that informs you about the charging status. When you purchase the speaker, you will receive USB charging cable as well as a power adapter.

The Users Feedbacks

When checking out the feedback, I can honestly say that most of the users are happy with their purchases. The compact design and top-notch durability are some of the aspects that most of the users love about this speaker. The IPX7 rating seems to be very appealing to outdoor goers. They love how they can bring the speaker to their outdoor activities without having to worry about breaking the speaker. It can survive being deep under the water up to a 1-meter depth for as long as 30 minutes. Plus, it is also shockproof. You can bring it during hiking or cycling and enjoy your music while being in nature. However, upon my observation, I also learned that some of the users complained about the expensive price tag. They also wish that the bass output could be deeper and better. Nevertheless, most of them rated the new UE Boom 2 wireless speaker as a five-star device and it receives a high rating of 4.6 on Amazon due to its satisfying overall performance.
